Modern art is one type of art that can express animal instinct. The image below is an elephant, named Elsa, painting on a canvas. The work is using animals being to help people understand that the important point of modern art is the differences between controlled and uncontrolled. It is true that animals can create an uncontrolled works, such as sculpture, painting, and dance. The point is that there is a subtle difference between the uncontrolled acts of painting by an animal and what appears, at first sight, to be an equally uncontrolled result from a human. This subtle difference is the key to understanding modern art. The point is that there is a subtle difference between the uncontrolled acts of painting by an animal and what appears, at first sight, to be an equally uncontrolled result from a human. This subtle difference is the key to understanding modern art. (Hollins 2010) More specifically, the subtle difference reveals that the unique human ability of creating our own sense of order and controlling over perception has driven us to override our animal senses. That is also the reason why people can distinguish an abstract painting created by animals from what appears to be an identical result by human being. For instance, when animal like chimpanzee or elephant paints an abstract it does not impose any sense of order or control over their actions.

On the contrary, human being must work to stop their mind imposing order and control if they want to do the same thing. In order to create an abstract painting people have to work in the opposite way to the animal mind. The ‘ability’ to find such images where they do not exist is an example of how our intelligent perception creates an additional level of recognition around all we see and do. Our intelligence does this to stop our old sensation of animal instinct emerging into our mind.

This Surrealist object was inspired by a conversation between Oppenheim and artists Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar at a Paris cafe. It was a good example to explain how animal instinct works during creating artwork. “The work takes advantage of differences in the varieties of sensual pleasure: fur may delight the touch but it repels the tongue. And a cup and spoon, of course, are made to be put in the mouth.”(MOMA 2004) This work shows how the artist gave up his human being and intelligent to just used animal instinct to create the “A fur covered cup”.

To experience objects and events in a frame of mind that would allow us to know them through our old ‘animal’ instincts would require our intelligence to look at our surroundings as if we had never seen them before (Hollins 2010). We can even through it’s shapes, colors, and sounds from our inner hearts. Only beginning to inherit and understand the instinct of animals, could we sense objects and events with an inner awareness. What’s more, in previous history, the instinct of animals was that we were born with. It doesn’t need to be formatted for learning. When you truly and intelligently understand what animal instinct is, another new perspective will emerge for you. This view is the key in modern art, but we often lose it. The instinct of animals as one of forms of traditional representation should be explored by us. Only in this way, could we discover the true meaning of modern art.

Photo editing by using PhotoShop& Third booklet editing layout

BIRD THREE.jpgThe third group photos were taken in studio with white backdrop. I have adjusted 20 photos’ tone, colour, and contrast. Then I have cut out of model’s figure, and put it on the Gucci Tian’s illustration image. The two layers are combined together, while the model’s figure are set up on half illustration image. Below is the outcome image I made. More detail of the making. I have erased the white background of each photos.

I have made two layer as well, because the white background is boring to show individually. I used Linear Burn to edited the background. In order to show out the model’s figure. Then I used eraser to clean redundant pattern.

DSC_0043The last example I created. It had different style. I used different filter which called photography tone. It’s a brown filter and made the image felt have a little by loneliness feeling. Also I combine a bark image which has the same colour as the image. As the image shows, I also added a tree illustration at the back of the model.

During the editing I also work on the booklet editing. The design of the layout was a little bit ordinary. So I am going look more fashion publication to get some editing ideas.

The second booklet making

IMG_8105Today, I have done the first booklet editing and started work on my second one. This one is about dolphin’s instinct. I have already down the photo shoot and some images editing.   To design this booklet layout I have also looked some fashion publications. I have inspired by one book which named Vivienne Westwood. This book has over 350 illustrations, many from leading photographers such as Nick Knight, Mario Testing and Annie Leibovitz, present highlights of the collections that have been a major influence on fashion, music an art since the 1970s. Outfits worn by the Sex Pistols Contrast with more recent creations for Sarah Jessica Parker, Tracey Emin and Cameron Diaz, demonstrating why Westwood is still the most talked-about designer in Britain. The photographs- a mix of ad campaigns, fashion shoots, catwalk shots and archive images- have been personally selected by Vivienne Westwood, and present her own vision of the high points of a career characterized by innovation and variety. The editing in this book is really attractive to me. It push the boundary of layout design. For example it used contact sheet as the background, while it has done some changes, like it changed the filter to whole black style. Not only that, it also used yellow high lighter to mark the photos. It completed with a shinning and colorful image. This editing seems give readers a working process of how they work on their fashion publication, which is quit unique and cool way to show it to audiences.IMG_8104.jpg

During the editing, I have gained help from my tutor. I learnt some new ending technique which can show different effect from before one. Personally, I think the new effect provide more life to my work which also made my work more interesting and more push the boundary of inflexible editing.

Final redesign with the first booklet

Carry on the editing of first booklet. I have finished the layout design and chose the images for the front and back cover. Actually, I have done a lot of changes to the booklet. And the final outcome looks much better than before. More detail, I have deleted some word decoration, because it was to busy to look the page with a paragraph literacy writing. And the font of it was too inflexible. And I have adjusted some words’ size to make them fit to the negative spaces. Also for the image’s visual effect I have change the images from black white to colorful image, while I did a little bit exposure to make the image had more filter feeling. As I mentioned before, I have added some prints which are heart, and X-ray bird. I think those are worked really well, those shows the “instinct” really straightly and help my work to proved some feeling from animal’s inside world. The last but not the least I have down today is the content sheet. I made it orderly, that showed all the information I want to show clearly. I am going to show the outcome to my teacher tomorrow,  get some feedback and work on with the negative parts.

BOOKLET outcome and change points

eagle editing 3

Today I have continued work on my first booklet. I have choose the images which I have used for the inside pages for the front cover, so I have used different effect for the image. For the title, I chose the simple font Arial Black, that provided a straight look. Then I also added some literary article as apart of image in the booklet. However, it didn’t have good look as I perspective. Personally, I think  the font didn’t go well with the images and layout. I have download some font online (the website called dafont), while I still didn’t find the right one. Probably, I have to work with it again. The other problem I faced today is the visual effect, especially the black ones, those are too dark shown on paper. I am going to change the filter or adjust the value of the images in order get the best look.

Then I have felt one empty page which is for content sheet, I have a draft idea of the layout and content about what I am going to write. Furthermore, I have decided use some art prints in the booklet to make it more attractive and could provide more different visual work to readers.

Museum Primary Research

Today I have been to Wellcome Collection Museum. There is a exhibition about see how humans related to other animals through time with making nature. In the museum I have discover how artists, philosophers and scientists have built different hierarchies in their view of the natural world.

“Kicking off a year-long exploration into our relationship with nature, this major exhibition examines what we think, feel and value about other species and the consequences this has for the world around us. It brings together over 100 fascinating objects from literature, film, taxidermy and photography to reveal the hierarchies in our view of the natural world and consider how these influence our actions, or inactions, towards the planet.”

Personally, I got huge impression of how we human relate to animals. How perfect way to combine natural things with art work.

I have had a book which called Naturally Mindful. It collected many short article and pome about nature and human ourselves. I think it is quite cool to use them in my booklet design. Also I bought some postcard which has dramatic prints that inspired me a lot of how I can work the graphic things with my fashion publication.

These threes print show the inside of animal body which also illustration instinct. I planed to combine them with my photos. In order to have a strong relation with the same animal instinct.

BOOKLET Redesign

IMG_8013This college is second created outcome. As I mentioned on my sketchbook, this two images of eagle are not my own photos, so in order to make them more belong to mine, I made them into a collage work by using Photoshop and InDesign.

IMG_8014

Then there were some small point that I have to adjust in my first draft booklet. For Instance, it is a page layout design outcome. When I printed out and binding it, I found the eagle shadow images can not be shown. So I moved it to right side. Furthermore, the print quality is not good as I expected. I have to make the filter and effect brighter, and more contracted.

IMG_8016The Last but not least example of redesign is shown left side. There are to much negative spaces, and no tittle to give readers first impression at the first pages. So I have added the title The Eagle. and I have found a poem of eagle and wrote it at the right top of the images. I think these work really well.

The whole booklet still has some points have to work on. first of all, I have to find two strong images as the cover of the fashion publication. Then I have to write one page of content. The total number of the booklet will be 21-22 pages.
